Heirloom Computing Launches ELPaaSTM – a PaaS for COBOL & IBM CICS PDF Stampa

ELPaaS (Enterprise Legacy Platform-as-a-Service) empowers enterprises to leverage their high-value trusted business applications on multiple clouds.

San Francisco, CA – April 11, 2012. Heirloom Computing, the Silicon Valley software company with a mission to enable existing applications to seamlessly participate in cloud computing infrastructures, today announced the availability of its ELPaaS platform.

Developers can start using ELPaaS today for free by signing up at http://www.elpaas.com. With ELPaaS, developers can create a fully-managed development and deployment environment in just a few minutes. ELPaaS uses Heirloom’s Elastic COBOL IDE (http://www.elasticcobol.com), which can run “as-a-Service” or on-premise, to quickly package, publish & deploy applications to their choice of target clouds.

Applications built for ELPaaS can also execute without change on other public & private cloud platforms, including CumuLogic, CloudBees, HP’s Pubic Cloud, Cloud Foundry, Stackato by ActiveState, Jelastic, Amazon’s Elastic Beanstalk, Amazon EC2, Red Hat’s OpenShift and Microsoft’s Windows Azure.

“Many enterprises have a massive investment in legacy applications that are literally the operational backbone & competitive differentiator of the business.” said Gary Crook, Heirloom’s President and CEO, “Being able to leverage those high-value trusted systems in cloud computing environments is a compelling alternative to expensive high-risk approaches such as rewrite or replace.”

Catherine Renaud, CEO of Software Creations, Inc. stated, “Heirloom's ELPaaS provides us with a rock-solid platform to run our fast-growth Virtual Spa & Salon (http://www.virtualspaandsalon.com) business. With the high-levels of automation & management that ELPaaS delivers, we can provision the necessary platform infrastructure for new clients in a matter of minutes."

“The unique technology behind ELPaaS, which is based on a patented execution environment, means that existing COBOL & CICS applications execute 100% on the Java platform.” said Mark Haynie, Heirloom’s CTO, “Not only does this mean that our customers can target a cloud of their choice, it also empowers enterprises to consolidate their existing application infrastructure to an open strategic platform that is proven & trusted for high-transaction workloads.”

Dale Vecchio, Research VP at analyst firm Gartner, Inc. commented “While COBOL applications will remain viable for quite some time, there are alternatives that can be used to begin to encircle and modernize these applications. A gradual evolution to these distributed technologies enables modernization to occur at a manageable pace, and better positions the application portfolio for cloud computing.”

“In today’s enterprise, Java is increasingly being adopted as the strategic technical platform for business systems.” said Michael Soby, President of CumuLogic. “We’re excited to be partnering with Heirloom’s unique capabilities so that customers can make the transition from proprietary legacy stacks to an enterprise-ready private Java PaaS such as CumuLogic.”
